PBC Tech has designed a game changing ultrathin supercapacitor with industry- leading performance. Supercapacitors enable companies to use smaller batteries without compromising energy or peak performance and the company’s patented form factor solution allows for revolutionary size changes in wearables, accessories, and mobile electronics.
The company’s products provide scalable voltage, energy and power in a single, ultrathin package. The long life, environmentally-friendly device works with existing lithium batteries, reducing waste, and fits in or around existing components. The company’s innovative business model and technology garnered recognition as a TIE50 2013 awardee and multiple competitive awards from NY State Energy and Research Development Authority.
Founded in late 2008 by a truly multi-disciplinary (biotech, nanotech materials, electronics) team of visionary scientists and an entrepreneur-in-residence at the Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, we have evolved our own commercial technology platform and built a sizeable patent portfolio of our own.
The company was founded with the vision of creating much needed, scalable, flexible, structural sheets of energy storage material that could be batteries or supercapacitors (hence the original name of the company – Paper Battery Company – the RPI founders produced the world’s first ‘paper battery’ in 2006). The company recently changed its name to PBC Tech (Powered By Capacitors).
The company chose high pulse power supercapacitor technology as its platform with the vision to integrate with the end product in totally novel ways and becoming the peak power management system for the end product, be it a wireless sensor node (as in Internet of Things) or a wearable or localized power in an electric transportation vehicle. The placement and distributed energy storage as a thin planar sheet are key issues relating to improved efficiency of decentralizing and managing distributed loads that need high power pulses.
The concept of LocalEverywhere™ power enables component count reduction and placement between or around existing structural elements. Power to Fit™ is now possible with the flexible form factor and patterns made available with our innovation – a breakthrough architecture and design that reduces individual device packaging needs while maintaining functionality. Integrating with the customer and making it easy to adopt new technology.
